Useful Information

Information about how to arrive at the conference venue can be found in the location link above, including a map with directions to the hotel.

The conference dates coincide with La Mercè, the annual festival of the city of Barcelona. Activities take place at venues throughout the city, including musical performances, street arts, workshops, open days at many museums and much more. A highlight is the many cultural traditions that are on display, such as human castles, big heads, giants and festive beasts, and traditional dances. you may wish to enjoy these during the evenings and on the Sunday after the conference. A link to the festival website is provided on the left of the page.

In addition, Barcelona offers a wealth of attractions to visitors. Information can be found at the offical tourist information website. The hotel is centrally located, and most of the interesting monuments and museums can be easily reached on foot. For information on how to get around the city by public transport, we recommend the official metropolitan transport website.

Optional Activities

Cultural Activities

We will be organising an optional cultural activity on Sunday 26th immediately after the conference. This will involve a visit to Gaudi's famous La Pedrera (Casa Milà), which is a short walk away from the hotel along the grand boulevard Passeig de Gràcia. We will meet at the hotel lobby on the morning of Sunday 27th. If you are interested in joining this visit, please see the conference organisers to register your names either when you arrive, or during the conference.

You may, of course, wish to visit the city independently on the Sunday. For the more adventurous, we recommend visiting the festival of La Mercè, including, if possible, the famous castells (human towers) of Barcelona. An exhibition of castells takes place at Plaça de Sant Jaume as part of the festival. We will have tourist information about the city available at the registration desk. Please contact the organisers at any time to ask for information and advice. Some useful links are also provided on the left.

Visit to ICFO

In addition interested participants are also invited to join a visit to the labs of the host institution, the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), on the Monday after the conference. ICFO is located in Castelldefels, about 20 minutes outside the city. We will meet at the hotel at 10am on the morning of Monday 27th and travel to ICFO as a group. If you are interested in joining the lab tour, please see the conference organisers to register your names either when you arrive, or during the conference.

Warning

Pickpockets are known to operate on the public transport system, particularly on the Metro and the transport links to the airport (bus and train). Please take appropriate care of your belongings when travelling by public transport. Note also that the conference date coincide with those of one of Barcelona's major festivals, La Mercè. The streets will thus be very crowded and pickpockets are known to target tourists during such events. Please take extra care of your belongings while walking around Barcelona.
